OEM MATERIAL GUIDE
Base Sheet, Coating, and Fragrance
Fabric softener sheet materials include a base sheet and a softening coating. A scented version also contains fragrance. For private label buyers, the key is to agree on the sheet material and coating specification before approving a sample. This guide covers sheets designed for use in a tumble dryer.
Which Fabric Softener Sheet Materials Should Buyers Specify?
01 · Base Sheet
The base sheet holds the coating. Polyester is one example of a sheet material. First, ask the supplier to identify the fiber and sheet construction. Then request the sheet size and base weight in grams per square meter (GSM).
02 · Softening Coating
The coating contains the softening agent. Some formulas use an esterquat, a type of quaternary ammonium compound. Ask which agent the supplier uses and how much coating it applies per sheet. Also confirm the acceptable variation from sheet to sheet.
03 · Fragrance
For a scented SKU, record the fragrance code on the sample sheet. Next, check the scent in the pack and on fabric after a dryer cycle. If you plan to sell a fragrance-free SKU, ask the supplier to confirm the formula in writing.
Published example. The P&G SmartLabel ingredient disclosure for one dryer sheet lists polyester, an esterquat, fatty acids, bentonite, and fragrance. Use this as a reference when asking for the ingredient list for your own SKU.
What Should an OEM Buyer Check on the Sample?
- Check the sheet and coating separately. Ask for the uncoated sheet weight in GSM and the coating amount per sheet. This gives you two figures to compare across samples of the same size.
- Pull several sheets from the pack. Check if they separate cleanly. Look for tears, sheets that stick together, or visible differences in the coating.
- Run a side-by-side dryer trial. Use the same fabric type, load size, and dryer settings for each sample. Then record any visible marks and compare the feel and scent of the fabric.
- Record the approved version. Finally, note the fiber type, sheet size, base weight, coating amount, and fragrance code. Ask the supplier how it will notify you if any of these change before a bulk or repeat order.
How to Request a Private Label Material Sample
Share your target market, sheet size, scent preference, sheets per pack, and estimated order volume. If you have a reference sample, include the features you want the supplier to match.
